Mt Sherman (14,036) by Brian Schultz Wednesday July 11, 1995
I stayed at the historic Fairplay Hotel last night, tried to sleep, but the sunburn from the Grays hike on Monday was hurting in a big way. My face was oozing in several areas, requiring burn ointment and making me wonder if I should even be out in the sun. I decided with hat, shades and sunscreen, I could go for Sherman and drove up to Leavick and the Fourmile Creek trailhead.
Clear, sunny weather and an easy grade made for a short day but lots of snow still layered the mountain, especially on the summit. On top was a group of boy scouts and two leaders who were just on their way down when I arrived. Although Sherman is above 14,000 ft, the summit is huge and it didn't quite feel like being on top of a mountain. Other than looking at Leadville and the fourteeners across the way and having lunch, I soon left also. I glissaded down the snow and met a group of hikers resting at the mine buildings. After a brief break and a short hike back to the car I headed out to Poncha Springs hoping the southern Sawatch's peaks were snow-free. Easy fourteener today!
Total hike time- 4 hours
