Reinecker Ridge North (10,313), Reinecker Ridge South (10,565), & Mexican Ridge (10,119) by Brian Schultz Wednesday July 26, 2023
Reinecker Ridge North:
Roundtrip mileage: 1.95 miles
Elevation gain: 700'
Start to finish: 1 hour 18 minutes
From Fairplay I drove north on Hwy 285 and turned right on CR 637. I parked a short distance on CR 637, hopped the fence, and began at 8:00 AM. I'd be using Whiley Hall's track for this peak. I soon entered the woods and found a trail that led part of the way. I steered clear of a large rock wall with a private property sign and continued toward the summit. I also saw a trailer that appeared to have electrical hook-ups, perhaps a hunter's quarters. Nobody was around. Once on the top I headed southeast to the highest point, where a rock cross embedded in the ground and another wood cross planted in a cairn marked the summit.
Reinecker Ridge South:
Roundtrip mileage: 4.50 miles
Elevation gain: 1,320'
Start to finish: 3 hours 5 minutes
After Reinecker Ridge North, I drove back to Hwy 285 and drove north to the town of Como. I turned east on Elkhorn Road (CR 15), right on Meadow Drive (CR 734), and left on James Mark Jones SWA road which led to a fence. Lots of cows were drinking from the water tanks at the fence and they left when I got out of the truck. At 10:55 AM, I jumped the fence and followed a road, just beyond the fence, north toward the peak. I had Paul Stratmoen's handy trip report with and would follow his track.
I departed the road when I saw a trail leading up to the south ridge. It disappeared after a while and then it was a moderate bushwhack to the top of the ridge. Once on the ridge, easy terrain with terrific views led to the summit. On the return, I descended a drainage just south of the summit that looked to be an easier bushwhack and it worked out well. It met up with a road not shown on any of my maps that brought me back to the road I started on near the water tanks.
Mexican Ridge:
Roundtrip mileage: 0.21 miles
Elevation gain: 35'
Start to finish: 8 minutes
I drove back to CR 734 and turned left, then right on Elkhorn View Drive. This road winds its way nearly to the top of the peak. The property is private and for sale but wasn't signed to keep out. There's no dwelling, just a turnaround driveway where I parked. It's a short hike with little elevation gain to the summit.
