Mt Morrison (7,881) by Brian Schultz Wednesday July 20, 2016
Roundtrip mileage: 3.75 miles from Red Rocks Park
Elevation gain: ~2,000'
Start to finish: 2 hours 30 minutes
Participants: Brian Schultz and grandson Tyler
After picking up my grandson Tyler from the airport, we got caught in traffic congestion on westbound I-70. When we finally got through it we headed for Morrison and parked at Gate 4 in Red Rocks Park. Tyler needed to change into hiking clothes and when he was ready, we headed up the trail at 11:30 AM under sunny, clear skies. This is an excellent trail but it's steep with a fair amount of elevation gain. We heard music from the nearby Red Rocks Amphitheater on the way up and it would accompany us for most of the hike.
Views opened up as we ascended higher and about half way up the peak we overtook a couple who'd started ahead of us from the parking lot. We enjoyed some fun scrambling just below the top and arrived on the summit at 1:00. We kept our stay short because we were hungry and eager to get to a restaurant. We departed at 1:05, hiked down mostly nonstop, and got back to the truck at 2:00.
