La Fevre Ridge (10,172), North Walton Peak (10,142), Walton Peak (10,559), & UN 9731 by Brian Schultz Saturday July 20, 2024

La Fevre Ridge:
Roundtrip mileage: 1.85 miles
Elevation gain: 1,025'
Start to finish: 2 hours 40 minutes
Participants: Tim Briese, Brian Schultz

From Walden we drove south on Hwy 125, turned north on CR 21, right (east) on FR 740, and straight ahead on FR 750. Just as FR 750 turns south we turned left on FR 750 1C, which is gated almost immediately. This is the trailhead. The peak looks pretty easy on paper but we soon found out it's a bushwhacking nightmare over lots of downed trees. And it's relatively steep. We began at 7:00 AM heading straight east toward the summit, picking the path of least resistance, and reached the summit at 8:10.

It's a neat summit with an interesting register. Inside the plastic container was not only the Mike Garratt register but a variety of items, including a dollar bill. Based on the sign-ins, this is a seldom climbed peak. We stayed 15 minutes and found the descent to be no easier than the ascent, actually taking a few more minutes than the ascent. We were back to the truck at 9:40.

North Walton Peak:
This peak is unranked and simply a drive-up. From Walden we drove Hwy 14 south to US Hwy 40, west to FR 302, and south on FR 302 to the summit. There is lots of dispersed camping along the road as well as on the large summit. We walked around the flat summit to several potential highpoints and enjoyed the sweeping views.

Walton Peak:
Roundtrip mileage: 2.90 miles
Elevation gain: 700'
Start to finish: 1 hour 50 minutes
Participants: Tim Briese, Brian Schultz

We drove back down from North Walton and parked along the road (elev. 10,000'), beginning our hike to Walton Peak at 12:45 pm. A quick descent brought us to a trail under a power line and we followed the trail until it disappeared. Then we bushwhacked to the road and followed it to the summit, but not before stopping for 15 minutes under some trees to wait out a passing storm. We descended our same ascent route.

UN 9731:
Roundtrip mileage: 1.50 miles
Elevation gain: 335'
Start to finish: 1 hour
Participants: Tim Briese, Brian Schultz

Continuing on U.S. 40 toward Steamboat Springs, we turned onto FR 296.1 and parked below a steep section that I wasn't comfortable driving on. We began at 3:30 PM on the road and departed it southeast of the peak. Easy terrain with lots of wildflowers brought us to the summit and we departed immediately after claiming the high point.
