Huron Peak (14,003)  by Brian Schultz  Friday  July 11, 1997

I left Buena Vista for the South Winfield trailhead. The road to Winfield from Hwy 24 was much better than the one to Harvard yesterday. I parked the car below the stretch where four wheel drive was necessary and at 7:10 hiked up the road to the gate under an overcast sky. Very shortly after the gate, the trail turned left and headed up lots of loose steep stuff- it was no fun! It was like this all the way to the basin where it finally leveled to grass and lots of snow. Huron's summit was above and to the right and I headed up towards the saddle ahead before making a straight line to the summit. It's all talus to the top and I passed several straggled groups of kids with two adult leaders. Feeling a little guilty from Yale two days ago in a similar situation, I paused to let the first group of kids step up on the summit before me.

The time was 11:05. Two other fellows were already on top, one was from Minnesota. Freezing cold and still overcast, it began to snow, but I stayed until 11:40 enjoying everybody's company. On the descent I passed Rob and Tracy who were also on Harvard yesterday. Making good time I got back to the car at 1:45. In Buena Vista that evening I looked up my friend Hadji at the Buffalo Bar and Grill. Great food after a day of hiking.

Total hike time- 6 hours 35 minutes (including 35 minutes on the summit)
