Doublehead Mountain (8,980) by Brian Schultz Thursday July 20, 2017
Roundtrip mileage: ~1.2 miles
Elevation gain: ~530'
Start to finish: 1 hour 20 minutes
I turned north off Hwy 285 (between Indian Hills and Aspen Park) onto South Hillview Rd and followed roads to a turn just past a house on the left side and parked (no signage posted). The road ahead led to a house with a "private property" sign posted so after waiting out a short but furious hail storm, I cut up left through the trees hoping there wouldn't be an issue with trespass.
It was lightly raining as I headed up and reached the radio tower on the false summit. The true summit is past the false summit and requires some easy class 3 climbing. I took it slowly on the wet rock. Another point further south along the ridge looked like it might be as high so I headed over but turned around at the summit block. The rock was harder than class 3, exposed, and wet, and I wasn't going to risk a fall on the slippery rock. John Kirk later confirmed that it wasn't Doublehead's highest point anyway.
The return was fast and easy. This was a fun little peak and good warm-up for tomorrow's climb on Mt Evans B and London Mtn.
