Coyote Hill (8,588), Monarch Ridge South (11,898), & UN 11692   by Brian Schultz   Friday August 26, 2011

Coyote Hill:

Roundtrip mileage: 0.5 miles from road

Elevation gain: minimal

Roundtrip time: 20 minutes

Coyote Hill is on the south side of Highway 50 near Doyleville and can be seen from the highway. I drove around the fenced north side of the peak to the east side and parked on the road. Old tracks from the road lead straight to the top and nice views can be seen despite the low elevation of the peak.

Monarch Ridge South:

Roundtrip mileage: 3 miles from Monarch Pass

Elevation gain: 350'

Roundtrip time: 1 hour 5 minutes

I drove Highway 50 from Coyote Hill to Monarch Pass. Monarch Ridge South is located on the east side of Monarch Pass with a road that leads to the top. I didn't know if it was permissible to drive the road so I just walked it. I hiked around several towers on top and over to another high point to be sure I hit the high spot.

UN 11692:

Roundtrip mileage: 1 mile

Elevation gain: 250'

Roundtrip time: 35 minutes

Located on the west side of Monarch Pass, the crux is crossing the highway without getting hit by a fast moving vehicle. Steep grunt initially but it only took 14 minutes to get to the top. The weather started deteriorating when I returned to my car at 10:45.
